Madonna wows crowds at Slane Castle

Thousands of fans went wild as Madonna erupted through the stage floor to take her throne at Slane Castle.
The Queen of Pop wowed a sell - out 80,000 - strong crowd of festival - goers with her dramatic 45 minute late entrance for her first - ever Irish concert.
Fans who have waited 20 - odd years were not left disappointed by the technical onslaught as images moved across the stage screens as the heavily - jewelled star spoke a passage called The Beast Within.
The atmosphere was electric as the first female to headline the County Meath Festival confidently began her hit parade with Vogue.
There were no pointed bras in sight but the 46 - year - old mother - of - two still lived up to her sensational image as she donned a slightly camp outfit of a sparkling silver corset, thigh - high boots and black hot pants.
Madonna's filmmaker husband Guy Ritchie watched her perform from a viewpoint close to the stage and their two children Lourdes and Rocco were also at the event.
Other celebrities greeted by the castle owner Lord Henry Mount Charles included former Labour politician Mo Mowlam, some members of rock band U2, Coronation Street star Keith Duffy and his wife Lisa, Westlife singer Kian Egan and his girlfriend Jodi Albert, from Hollyoaks.
Madonna's Reinvention tour is a mix of her hits which have spanned three decades, including songs from her Like A Virgin album to American Life.
The wizardry erupted behind as the 12 - strong dancing troupe swung down from the ceiling to perform acrobatic feats including trapeze tricks and tap dancing.
Aileen Barnes, 40, from Walkinstown in Dublin, said: 'I've been a fan of hers since the early 1980s. As a young girl I always wanted to see her. She never came so I never got a chance.

Madonna thrills Irish crowd

By Nicholas McCarthy
The Irish 'do it better,' according to pop icon Madonna.
For the Material Girl thrilled the crowd during her first appearance at Slane Castle near Dublin by wearing a T - shirt expressing exactly those sentiments.
She later threw the piece of clothing out to a delighted audience.
Despite initial concern about ticket sales for this part of her Re - invention tour, fans packed the outdoor venue on Sunday to see the superstar unleash hit after hit, from a repertoire spanning a entire 20 - year career.
Crowd favourites included oldies from the 1980s and 1990s, such as Like a Prayer and Vogue, as well as more recent material such as Hollywood and Music.
There was a heavy shower just before Madonna went onstage, but the weather remained relatively dry, much to the delight of the concert goers.
At the beginning of the show, Madonna was raised onto the stage wearing black hot pants with a gold sequined top and black knee - high boots.
The show featured spectacular dance routines involving acrobats and breakdancers, with an incredibly energetic Madonna incorporating complex yoga moves into the high - octane choreography.
The stage was carefully designed to avoid delays during set changes.
The 46 - year - old singer was lifted into the air on rising pedestals, whizzed across the stage on a conveyer belt and disappeared through trap doors for occasional, and very slick, costume changes. True to form, Madonna did not shy away from controversy, and mounted a strong anti - war protest with the song American Life.
It was set against the backdrop of a powerful video sequence depicting the horror of war, as dancers donned military uniforms and marched around caged prisoners.
Madonna's vocal performance was nothing short of incredible given the singer's fast - paced choreography and at times she took up the guitar herself and played ballads for her fans.
The singer also used the occasion to perform a cover of John Lennon's Imagine, which she said was one of her favourite songs.
Madonna crowned her 90 - minute set with a dazzling performance of Holiday which saw the singer and her dancers move out into the crowd on an elevated platform.
They were then lowered below the stage to the sound of fireworks in the distance, confetti raining down and rapturous applause from fans.
Supporting Madonna was DJ Paul Oakenfold who played two 30 - minute sets, and rock sensation Iggy Pop, who sent crowds wild with his antics, as he leapt off the stage to greet fans after his performance which lasted more than an hour.

Madonna connects with her adoring audience (tour review - spoiler)

By Sonia Murray

It is so easy to get caught up in the self - generated swirl that is Madonna.
The sexually - charged themes of her music, performances and costumes over the course of her 21 professional years. The 'sex' book. The children's book. The kiss. The Kabbalah. And the latest about her wanting to be called Esther.
It's enough to make you weary way before you learn that attending her greatest hits concert billed as the Reinvention Tour could cost you up to 0; one of the priciest tickets this summer for a star with fading record sales.
But then you see Madonna alone on stage confidently strutting along the moving sidewalk during 'Nobody Knows Me,' or playing the guitar exceptionally well during 'Burning Up,' and it is hard not to marvel at the force she is all by herself.
From the moment the 45 - year - old appeared on stage at Philips Arena in Victorian costume and ageless shape, until the confetti came down two hours later during 'Holiday,' Madonna's 'Reinvention' commanded the senses.
Sometimes it was the jarring, jittery images flashed on the ever - changing screens of her backdrop.
Even the brief interludes packed with trapeze artists, a skateboarder, a tap dancer, a bagpipe player and a drum corps deserved ovations.
But Madonna simply, finally, appealing to her ravenous audience by doing her ever - catchy hits 'Vogue,' 'Express Yourself,' 'Material Girl,' after 'Into the Groove' and all was without question the biggest pleaser.
The last time she performed in Atlanta, three years ago during the 'Drowned World' tour, her focus was current - album heavy and there was little to no attempt to connect with the audience. This time around there were holes on the side of the stage, MTV Awards - show style, so that fans could dance right along  though just below her.
And there were plenty of opportunities. In fact, even thuds like 'American Skin (LIFE)' and that awful rapping the still - capable vocalist does during 'Mother and Father' became somehow slightly more tolerable reimagined for the live audience.
'Don't ever tell me,' Madonna sang three - fourths into the concert, almost as if she was testifying. 'I saaaiiid don't ever tell me. Don't you ever, ever, ever, ever tell meeee. Toooo stoooop.'
Yeah right Madonna, like you would listen.
Or more importantly, after performances like this, like someone would actually suggest such a thing.
