The first single and title track from Madonna's fourth studio album was ushered in with a positively scandalous music video. Mary Lambert directed the clip, which blended religious imagery with a mistaken identity crime story. It was laced with enough controversial details to keep theorists guessing as to what the exact meaning of the video was. What about the burning crosses? The stigmata? The embrace with a Saint? Everyone got so riled up over the video, even Pepsi dropped Madonna as its spokesperson, removed her soda commercial from the airwaves and declined to back her "Blond Ambition" tour. However, the single spent three weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. and was a universal smash: it reached No. 1 in the U.K., Canada, Germany, Japan and Australia. The video won the 1989 MTV Video Music Award for viewers choice - ironic, considering the award was sponsored by Pepsi.
